*Sorry I'm late with this one! The holiday screwed with my schedule. Hopefully I'll be able to get back on track and have my Q&A's on Mondays!*
Grimdeva from CauldronCraftMinis makes THE coolest miniatures I’ve ever seen! Her creations really make me want a dollhouse! Whether you’re a Halloween fanatic (like me!), a fantasy freak, or a mushy romantic she has you covered! Grimdeva divulges some information about herself and her craft here:
CZ: Tell us a little about yourself!
GD: I usually describe myself as spooky but nice, meaning I like dark and secret things but I'm not into wishing ill on people. I believe in karma. I'm a full time college student in Mortuary Science. I have a BA in Cultural Anthropology and was teaching for 3 yrs in a Comparative Religion program at a Michigan university. Now in my late 30's I'm making a career change. I make art for personal therapy and just hope to make a few bucks here and there to pay for books and tuition.
CZ: What type of items do you sell?
GD: Mostly dollhouse miniatures in 1:12 scale but I'm branching into Barbie size playscale too. The themes I work in are Steampunk, Cemetery, Egyptian, Halloween, Wizard's Magic, and Fairy. I also make mixed media collages, assemblage shrines, and spooky doll repaints.
CZ: What is the inspiration behind your shop?
GD: Spooky and fantasy miniatures and oddities for the magically inclined dollhouse and individual. Not for the faint of heart dearies!
CZ: What is the greatest compliment you have received about your work?
GD: When I was being urged by a dollhouse shop owner to avoid the darker material and 'keep it cute', I ignored her and put some of my vampire stuff up on Etsy. Someone bought 3 things right away and wrote me that 'they had always been looking for the kind of stuff I make and thank goodness they had found me'. I knew I had a market right then, I just had to get the word out.
CZ: When did you first realize that you weren’t “like the other kids”?
GD: When I was in the sandbox at about 4 yrs old and this boy Chris Shaw said girls can't play with trucks, I punched him and took his truck. I'm just very independent and aggressive and know who I am.
CZ: What’s a typical day in the life of this Dark Sider like?
GD: I'm multi-tasking while I'm thinking about the pasta sauce I have to make for dinner, which doll will I chop the hair off of, should I memorize my 200 vocabulary words before bed or in the morning, which cat threw up in my closet, should I glue bats on my purple velvet platforms? I'm very busy with school, art, and home life.
CZ: Zombies or Vampires?
GD: Vampires have cool stuff but I love zombie shows- it's like I'm studying for the apocalypse and getting tips on how to survive.
CZ: Which horror character do you identify with most?
GD: In Blade III, Parker Posey's character, Danica Talos. She's hilarious, predatory, very tacky, works with her brother and big boyfriend to take over the world... they have a vampiric pomeranian... sounds like me.
CZ: What scares you?
GD: Driving on the highway. The thought just pisses me off.
CZ: When my undead masses take over will you be with us or against us?
GD: Probably against because I want to go to the light and meet the Buddha. The dark side has cookies but I hear the Buddha has snow cones.
